Perhaps this is an even better way of keeping things alive.
Use the following options either on the command line or in your /etc/ssh/ssh_config file (thats the path for Opensuse).
Host *
ServerAliveInterval 15
ServerAliveCountMax 4
I think this method might be more reliable.
